There’s still time to apply for residential energy credits in 2020, but you need to hurry. The updated announcement in January of 2020 was that Nonbusiness Energy Property Tax Credits have been retroactively extended from December 31, 2017, through December 31, 2020. Some homeowners know this as an energy efficient windows tax credit, because replacement windows are included, under qualified circumstances. The program allows you to take a tax credit in the amount of 10% of the cost, up to $500, or a specific amount from $50-$300.
Who Qualifies to Apply for the Energy Efficient Tax Credit
To qualify to apply for the energy efficient tax credit, the property must be an existing home. New construction homes do not apply, so if you are currently building a new home, this credit is not for you. Also, if you are renting your home, you are ineligible to apply. Also, the home must be your principal residence. Vacation homes, timeshares, and rental properties do not apply.
Windows Tax Credit
Take advantage of the opportunity to experience savings on your window replacement with the tax credit for new windows. Also known as a windows tax credit, this opportunity is a way to save money and energy usage, while improving the comfort and beauty of your home. Replacing old windows with energy efficient windows saves you money. Energy Efficient certified windows lower household energy bills by an average of 12 percent nationwide. Whether you want to use the credits towards windows, doors, or skylights, you do not have to replace them all in order to qualify. Replacing just one window in your home qualifies.
New installation projects, where there was not previously a window, also qualifies under the program; however, the tax credit does not include installation costs. That means that the credit amount is 10% of the cost of the product, up to $200 for windows and up to $500 for doors and skylights.
Something to keep in mind is that to qualify for receiving the tax credits, your new window, door, or skylight must be ENERGY STAR certified.
